Q: What is MR glue?
A: “MR” is the acronym of “Moisture Resistant” . MR glue means the glue is resistant to moisture . So The meaning of “MR” is different from that of “Melamine ” and “phenolic” . “Melamine ” or “phenolic” is the name of a specific glue . But Like the word of WBP“, ” MR ” is only a kind of property/feature of glue . If a glue has MR property, the glue will can be called MR glue .
Plywood with MR glue is resistant to moisture . MR plywood are usually used for home interior application, such as furniture grade plywood / blockboard and so on .
MR glue can also be used for some exterior shuttering plywood / film faced plywood (formwork plywood) , too . MR plywood can be in cold water for some days without delamination . So MR shuttering plywood or MR film faced plywood can be used for some simple construction projects .
However MR plywood will delaminate in hot-water within short time (no more than 30 minutes) .
Q; What is WBP glue?
A: WBP stands for “Water Boiled Proof” . If you use WBP glue for the plywood / film faced plywood, the panel will can be exposed to weather, water and moisture for a long period (some maybe permanently ) without delamination
A: Phenolic plywood is about 10 -18% more expensive than MR and melamine plywood of same thickness . Customers usually ask why phenolic plywood is so expensive . The reasons are as the following:
1. Phenolic glue is 50-80% more expensive than MR and melamine glue .
2. In order to guarantee a better glue bonding strength, the compression time for phenolic plywood have to be longer than that for MR/melamine plywood . This means we have to spend more producing time for phenolic plywood than MR/melamine plywood . Spending more time means costs increase .
3. Because the compression time for phenolic plywood is longer, the compression ratio for phenolic plywood is bigger than that for MR/melamine plywood . This leads to that the veneers for phenolic plywood must be thicker than the veneers for MR/melamine plywood of same thickness . In this situation, the costs of core veneers for phenolic plywood are higher than that for MR/melamine plywood .
4. Because the compression time for phenolic plywood is longer, the energy (including coal,electricity and so on) will be spent more and the labor costs will rising accordingly during the production of each piece of phenolic plywood .
